Pyramidal growth to 40 to 50 feet. Spread 18 to 40 feet. Noted for its spiny, evergreen leaves and bright red berries which mature in autumn. In youth, this holly is pyramidal with branches to the ground. Prefers wet to moist, but well drained, sandy, loamy, acidic soil. Tolerates air pollution. Clippings can be used for holiday decorations as plant can withstand heavy pruning in winter. Prune branches at their point of origin. These plants are female plants, grown from cuttings from an American Holly. Plant one male holly for every 6 to 8 female plants to ensure good fruit set. Good for hedge, screen or specimen plant.
