Also known as Japanese Barberry. A multi-stemmed upright, columnar shrub. This Barberry is vertical in shape, tall, slender and matures somewhat slowly to a height of 4 to 5 feet. Spread 1 to 2 feet. The attractive foliage is a rich reddish purple on reddish brown stems with sharp thorns. Fall foliage is outstanding red. Tiny clusters of yellow flowers appear along the stems in late April to early May. The fruits are showy, glossy, scarlet berries that form in abundance in the fall, often persisting well into winter. Bird friendly. Deciduous. Plant in full sun to partial shade. Tolerant of many soils and conditions. Also tolerant of road salt and pollution. Deer resistant. Low maintenance. Forms an excellent hedge or barrier. The unique form is ideal for framing a door or between windows. Great as a specimen, group planting, for the smaller garden and for firescaping.
