A flat, stiff, dense shrub with horizontal spreading branches. Grows 2 to 3 feet tall. Spread 5 to 8 feet. Symmetrical sprays of deciduous, glossy green foliage. The leaves turn reddish purple in fall. Bees are attracted to the tiny pink flowers in spring. Masses of bright scarlet berries follow the flowers in autumn and persist into winter. Moisture loving, but prefers well drained soil of any type. Plant in full sun to partial shade. Drought tolerant once established. Low maintenance. Attracts birds. Rabbit resistant. Plant on banks and slopes for erosion control. Often grown in parks and used for hedging. Can be espaliered. Excellent ground cover. Gives a pleasing effect sprawled over rocks in a rock garden or draped over a wall.
