Description

Also known as the Alligator Tree due to the gray, deeply furrowed, scaly ridges of its bark. An aromatic, deciduous tree growing in a very symmetrical pyramidal form to a height of 40 to 75 feet. Branches spread in a horizontal fashion to 30 to 35 feet. A native easily recognized by its star-shaped leaves which are either five or seven pointed, toothed lobes. Squirrels often caught hoarding the prickly seedballs which persist into winter.
