This fast growing tree will grow to a height of 55 to 85 feet , with a spread of 35 to 65 ft. Its vase-shaped form and gradually arching branches makes it a favorite for urban tree planting. The six inch long leaves are dark green throughout the summer fading to yellow in fall. Early spring before leaves unfold, small green flowers appear, followed by green wafer-like seed pods which when mature are popular with birds and other wildlife. Wood of the American Elm is very hard and is a valuable timber tree used for lumber and furniture making. Native Americans once used the American Elm trunks to make canoes and early settlers used them to make barrels and wheel hoops. Likes well drained, rich soil, but grows under a variety of conditions. May be used as an ornamental. Native to North America.
