Also known as West Virginia Balsam Fir. Native to isolated pockets in the mountains of the Canaan Valley in West Virginia. Relatively dense, pyramidal conifer with a spire-like tip growing to a height of 40 to 55 feet. Spread 20 to 25 feet. Short, soft needles tend to be lustrous, dark green to bluish-green with silvery bands on the underside. Resistant to spring frost injury due to its tendency to break bud late. Strong, uniform, short ascending branches are good attributes for a cut Christmas tree. Highly adaptable to many soil conditions even wet, poorly drained areas. Thrives in cooler climates. Plant in shaded areas or direct sunlight. Suitable as an accent plant, screen or group planting.
