Grand Fir is the fastest growing of the evergreen conifers, growing to a height of 200 to 300 feet at full maturity. Often growing as much as three feet a year. The conic crown becomes round topped or straggly with age. The branches grow low, are abundant and drooping. The soft needles are sharp tipped, dark glossy green above and greenish white beneath, with two highly visible white lines on the underside. The bark is gray and thin when young becoming brown and furrowed with age. The upright growing cones measure 2 to 4 inches long and are light green or purple tinged, maturing to dull gray-brown and are very resinous. Native to the northwestern United States. Tolerant of most soils that are deep and moist. Relatively drought resistant. Plant in sun, partial shade or a shady location. The soft wood is a valued source of pulpwood. It is harvested for timber and also used for plywood, siding, framing, furniture parts and boxes and crates. The strong orangish fragrance makes this fir a preferred species of Christmas tree.
