Also known as Spotted Oak, Schneck Oak, Shumard Red Oak or Swamp Red Oak. The Shumard Oak is one of the largest of the oak species in the Red Oak group. This deciduous tree has a broad open crown growing to a height of 40 to 60 feet with a spread of 30 to 40 feet or more.
The leaves are shiny and dark green with spiny deep lobes. This stately, strong and long-lived tree makes a dramatic autumn statement, with leaves turning brilliant red to red-orange, fall into winter.
Acorns are relatively large, 1 inch in length, enclosed at the base in a shallow, thick, flat saucer-shaped cup. Acorns are produced every two to four years. These fruits are a favorite of deer, squirrels, several species of songbirds and game birds such as wild turkey and quail.
Full sun is ideal. Grows in acidic, alkaline, loamy, well drained soil, but tolerates a wide range of soil conditions including wet soils. Native range Southeastern United States.
